Brian Eno and Harold Budd "Ambient 2/The Plateaux of Mirror " (1980)

Genre: Ambient

"Eno's ambient ideal was formed in 1975 during months of lying in a hospital bed recovering from a car accident, forced to listen to too-quiet 18th century harp music that his body cast prevented him from turning up. This alerted him to the way that recorded sound can effectively merge with the environment in which it's played, appealing to "many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular." He aimed to create a cocoon for thought and reflection through a music that could be used with utilitarian purpose. He has described the process as a painter taking the human figure out of a landscape. In music, this figure took the form of his own voice, a cohesive melody, and other evidence of human intervention-- by eliminating these, he created a sense of space where there was once an object." -Pitchfork

The Tuss "Rushup Edge" (2007)

Genre: IDM

The Tuss is an electronic music group supposedly consisting of Cornish musicians Brian and Karen Tregaskin. It recently released an EP and an album on Rephlex Records.

Continuous unconfirmed rumors are circulating that The Tuss is a pseudonym of Aphex Twin, or a collaboration featuring him. A newsletter from Warp Records comparing Confederation Trough's sound to that of an Analord release along with an article in The Guardian[1] seemingly support the theory of The Tuss being an Aphex Twin-related project. The usage of a Yamaha GX1, an exceptionally rare and expensive (even at the time of release) analogue synthesizer[2] also seems to suggest that Brian and/or Karen Tregaskin is Aphex Twin, as he is one of the few owners of such a synthesizer in the United Kingdom[1]. The fact James played a track from Rushup Edge during live sets in Mayrhofen, Austria and Torino, Italy in 2005 lends further credence to the theory.

Rephlex Records says:

"‘Rushup Edge’ is the debut album of new Rephlex artists, “The Tuss”, a dynamic duo discovered via intensive MySpace exploration by the A&R department. Apparently touted by Planet Mu, XL Recordings, Record Makers and Ninjatune all at the same time, they eventually decided to sign with Rephlex for reasons of principle. The label is very excited to find an act with this degree of promise and hope to be releasing even more work soon.

The Tuss’ official line seems inspired by the time FFRR signed Chicago house legend Lil Louis’ smash hit “French Kiss”, even though they had no information about him at all at the time! The Tuss offers little biographical info, preferring to concentrate on the musical merits, which they describe as ‘Braindance’. Rephlex don’t really mind too much but hope to acquire some photographic evidence soon – watch this space!

Wolf Parade "Untitled/Six Song EP"

Genre: Indie Rock

6-Song (E.P.) is the second EP by Canadian indie rock band Wolf Parade. The EP is a collaborative effort by the band members. Song writing and vocals are split between members Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug.

The first four songs on the EP would later appear on the band's debut LP Apologies to the Queen Mary. Though some, such as "Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts" would be in slightly different forms.

The EP is packaged in a clear plastic sleeve, with the CD itself wrapped in a tri-fold piece of paper with the album artwork and tracklisting on it. The artwork was made by Tracy Maurice.

The songs here are less polished(in a good way) on this EP than on the final album. Check it!

Flanger "Outer Space Inner Space" (2001)

Genres: Jazz, Nu-Jazz, Electronic, Acid Jazz

It's ja-a-a-a-zz folks, but not as we know it. How could it be when it's Burnt Friedman and Atom™ setting the controls for the dyslexic heart of the dark side of the moon?

Agents from a more distant future, Flanger echo JG Ballard, pondering the question "Which way to inner space?". Kubrick's vision of 2001 showed us that the quest for space exploration is, of course, underpinned by an inner journey. Flanger pose in silver space suits for the cover art, recalling the anecdote about Salvador Dali, who donned a diver's suit to deliver a lecture, and nearly suffocated. As a playful apparition of an alternate future, it sure beats all those laptop clicks, eh?

Pinback mix v.2 (Arpeggi)

Genre: Indie Rock

While a rotating cast of instrumentalists find loose assembly under the Pinback name, the partnership of Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow is at the heart of some of the most complex, postmodern indie pop happening on the West Coast.

Try this pinback mix if you love the band or haven't heard of them.
