8/11 - Saving Our Seabirds


"We may not have a giant panda or a tiger, but we do have some of the most
impressive sea-bird colonies," says wildlife conservationist Roy Dennis in
this film about the crisis facing Britain's sea birds. "Seventy per cent of
the world's northern gannets breed on our shores," he adds, as if this fact
will provoke even the most apathetic viewer to sit up and take notice.
Dennis's quietly precise and homely delivery is the polar opposite of Nigel
Marven and the late Steve Irwin's urgent styles, but there's plenty of footage
to thrill: the spectacle of thousands of nesting gannets carpeting Bass Rock
and turning it into a giant iced rock cake is extraordinary; while the magnificent
scenery simply takes your breath away.
